11th A.It.U.N. Meeting

The University of Padua organized for the first time the 11th A.It.U.N. Meeting the last 11th and 12th of May. The Meeting thematic was “Clinical experience and technological innovation in pain therapy: from traditional APIs to cannabinoids”.

The Meeting took place in the conference room of Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, given for free from Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo, where the poster session was also hosted. Around 70 master students, PhD students and young researchers joined the event and 32 abstracts were submitted. 10 invited speakers gave their contribution to make the Meeting topic interesting and challenging.

The Meeting was inaugurated in the afternoon of the 11th by the chair Francesca Borgna and the Faculty Advisor professor Nicola Realdon. Professor from the University of Padua and professor Maurizio Evangelista from the University La Cattolica of Rome were gave two lectures about pain physiopathology and the treatment of neuropathic pain. After a coffee break, professor Giusti (University of Padova) talked about treatment of nociceptive pain before Professor Santi, who talked about “Transdermal delivery of painkillers: advantages and limitations”. To finish the first day congress Professor Marjo Yliperttula from the Univeristy of Helsinki talked about “Nanofibrillar cellulose membrane; - new promising candidate for wound healing treatment”.

In the evening a very nice social dinner, offered by A.It.U.N., took place at Caffè Pedrocchi, historical building of Padova. Dr. Maddalena Murari delighted the guests with her exceptional skills at the piano playing Chopin and Rachmaninov.

In the second day of congress Dr. Ulrika Espefält Westin gave a lecture on the use of ceramic materials for the production of transdermal patches with reduced risk of abuse, followed by Dr. Paolo Macor (University of Trieste) who talked about “Targeted approaches for the treatment of rheumatic diseases”. During the second morning session the PhD students who submitted the best abstracts gave their oral presentations: Gaia Quaroni (Milano), Barbara Crivelli (Pavia) and Adryana Clementino (Parma).

Vittoria Borgonetti, University of Siena, inaugurated the last session talking about the antiinflammatory use of the not psychtropic extract of Cannabis. Dr. Luongo from the University of Campania gave a presentation about: “N-acyl ethanolamines in the treatment of abnormal pain: new mechanism of action of the N-palmitoylethanolamide”. Laura Graziano, Anton Paar, sponsor of the event, gave a talk before the lecture of Dr. Gallo about regulatory issues related to the therapeutic use of Cannabis. Last speaker of the congress, the PhD student Elisa Vettorato (Padova).

After the final remarks of the Chair Francesca Borgna, Serena Bertoni made the early announcement of the 12th A.It.U.N. Meeting that will take place in Bologna.
